Montserrat: Science Under the Volcano

A mere 49 square miles, this island in the Leeward chain awoke in July 1995 to a major eruption in the South Soufriere Hills. This coincided with the day that Dr. Brosnan and her team arrived on the island to begin a program on coral reefs and marine reserves. She and the volcano have been linked ever since. An ever escalating volcano eventually led to the evacuation of the southern half of Montserrat, and much of the land and towns including Plymouth were buried under ash. Risking life for science, Dr. Brosnan has been helicoptering into the volcano zone, and diving under the eruptions to learn more about their impacts. In the pages below you can read some of the earlier reports. Recent updates are in preparation for this site.

St Barthelemy: Research and Discovery

St Barths is a tiny French island, also volcanic in origin. But thankfully the volcanoes are dormant. SEI began working in this French island in 1996, at the request of the New England Biolabs Foundation and the French Government. Our mission was to study the reefs and design and implement a research and monitoring program. The new Reserve,La Reserve Naturelle de St. Barthelemy, was officially inaugurated in November 1999 (See the Celebration), and 2001 marked SEI's new scientific research effort there.
