Information on Proposed Land Transfer
The proposed land transfer was negotiated between the US and Californian
governments,
and the Pacific Lumber Company, on September 29 1996. It calls for the
transfer of land
or property. Central features of the plan, that affect Marbled Murrelets are:
Development of a Habitat Conservation Plan
by Pacific Lumber, for approval by the US
Fish and Wildlife Service, and by California
agencies.
Transfer of 3,177 acres of old-growth Redwood forest
(the Headwaters and Elk Head Springs stands) from
Pacific Lumber to public ownership, together with
approximately 1,542 acres of younger forest.
Purchase of approximately 1,845 acres of younger
forest surrounding the Headwaters complex to
add to the public reserve
Harvest of 4,675 acres of old-growth
and partially harvested Redwood stands
under the HCP
Purchase and transfer to Pacific Lumber of 7,755
aces of younger forest to add to the Company's
managed forests.
The current goal for submission of the HCP is summer 1997.
