Programs

SEI is committed to bringing the best science to environmental issues. We recognize that scientific action is urgently needed in most ecosystems. The Institute's programs focus on the science, conservation, and management of:

Marine Ecosystems
The seas cover 70% of the planet, but conservation science and management of the oceans has long lagged behind that of the terrestrial. Whether dodging volcanoes, carrying out ordination analysis, or innovative community-based intertidal monitoring, SEI's marine program brings scientific knowledge to ocean conservation on a global scale. We are dedicated to working with those communities where scientific input is greatly needed but lacking. Tour the program at Caribbean Coral Reefs, Temperate Shores, and Marine Mammals and Sustainable Alternatives to Whaling.
Forest Ecosystems
Northern forest ecosystems are symbols of biodiversity and controversy. From the California Redwoods, to Pacific Northwest forests, to Siberia and the Russian Far East, we seek to move away from position-based arguments and into the realm of scientifically informed decisions. Learn more about SEI's Forest Ecosystems Program, includig the California Redwoods and Headwaters Forest, Sustainable Forestry in Russia, and the effects of landscape pattern, fire, and forestry on songbirds.
Endangered Species
The endangered species list continues to grow. There is a critical need for scientific input into the maintenance and recovery of these species and their habitats. SEI's endangered species program is a hallmark of the Institute's commitment to cooperative and science-based solutions. Tour the program at:The Marbled Murrelet Neotropical Migrant Birds ,PVA for the Montserrat Oriole, Science and Policy, .

Habitat Conservation Plans
HCPs are an important bridge between our Endangered Species and Science and Policy program areas, and SEI has played an instrumental role in making several of these complex, often contentious plans work. Whether assiting with an plan's basic design or peer reviewing a draft proposal, the Institute's dedication to sound science and cooperative problem solving has proven to be a valuable asset in formulating and implementing a effective HCPs.

Science and Policy
A key component of SEI's program is informing conservation and environmental policy on local, national and international scales. This is a major growth area for SEI which already has an established framework and track record in peer review and scientific involvement by SEI scientists and the conservation science panel, SEI maintains an ongoing Science and Policy Forum, continues to work in D.C. with policy makers, and other projects to respond to requests for assistance.
