The three year project, The Alliance for Corporate Transparency, gathered civil society organizations and experts to examine non-financial corporate disclosure of the 100 largest companies operating in the European Union.
In 2014 the European Parliament passed a directive (effective 2017) aimed to increase the transparency of corporations’ environmental, societal, human rights and anti-corruption activities through mandatory non-financial reports.
The Alliance for Corporate Transparency (ACT), made up of several organisations including Oxfam, World Wide Fund for Nature and Stockholm Environment Institute, examined 105 European corporations’ disclosure reports.
The research assessed the description of policies and due diligence processes, outcomes, principal risks, and key performance indicators and whether or not the disclosed information was specific enough to allow an understanding of companies’ impact and strategy.
In addition, the research analysed companies’ disclosure on particular important environmental and human rights issues and on their anti-corruption programmes.
