Media Advisory for 15 November 2018
This briefing will take stock of recent issues in the science and policy of sustainable development. It takes place one month since the latest IPCC report on climate change, two weeks after the first global conference on air pollution and health and two weeks before the UNFCCC climate change summit in Poland.
Dr Jian Liu is the Chief Scientist of UN Environment and Director of the Science Division, UN Environment. He has headed UN Environment’s Climate Change Adaptation Unit and was the Deputy Secretary of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC). He is in Stockholm for the first annual meeting of the World Adaptation Science Programme (PROVIA).
This briefing is a unique opportunity to gain insights into the role of science in informing political decision making on climate change, and highly relevant environmental issues. The panelists will address how the latest climate research, including the recent report from the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, will inform the upcoming climate policy negotiations. They will be available to provide insights on the latest scientific results on adaptation to climate change, biodiversity loss and air pollution.
Dr Jian Liu will make a presentation on the role of science in informing decision making on climate change, and other environmental issues such as air pollution, biodiversity and the oceans.
Dr Jian Liu will be introduced by Dr Åsa Persson, Research Director at Stockholm Environment Institute. Professor Richard Klein, Senior Research Fellow at SEI and Director of Science and Innovation at the Global Center on Adaptation, will also be available to answer questions.
Mr. Niklas Hagelberg, Coordinator of UN Environment’s subprogramme on climate change, will contribute with his expertise on topics related to climate change, biodiversity and plastics in the oceans.
Professor Dr Richard Klein will speak about the latest IPCC report and expectations for the upcoming UNFCCC climate change summit in Poland.
SEI researcher Cleo Verkuijl will speak about the Paris Agreement rulebook and Talanoa Dialogue, a process designed to help countries implement and enhance their NDCs by 2020. SEI researcher Kevin Adams will speak about climate change adaptation and finance.

Jian Liu has over 30 years of professional experience in science and policy, in the domains of ecosystems management, agriculture, environment and climate change at national, regional and global levels, in particular in developing countries. Jian holds a doctorate degree in Physical Geography from the Graduate School of Chinese Academy of Sciences, Beijing, China.
He was the Director of UN Environment’s International Ecosystem Management Partnership, the first global center on ecosystem management in the global south, which he established, as the founding director. Prior to this appointment, he served as the Chief of UN Environment’s Climate Change Adaptation Unit and the Deputy Secretary of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC).
His earlier posts include Deputy Director General of the Bureau of Resources and Environment, Chinese Academy of Sciences, Director of the Chinese Ecosystem Research Network, and Manager of Environment Program of the International Centre for Integrated Mountain Development.
Niklas Hagelberg is a Senior Programme Officer at UN Environment where he is the Coordinator of UN Environment’s subprogramme on Climate Change. Niklas work includes setting the strategic direction of the subprogramme, programme oversight and progress review and fundraising.
Previously Niklas worked as Coordinator for the Healthy and Productive Ecosystems subprogramme. In the Natural Resources Branch at UN Environment, his responsibilities included building a project portfolio on forests and integrated landscape management. Niklas was also part of the team that established the global UN-REDD programme and UN-REDD country programmes in Tanzania and Vietnam.
Richard Klein is a Senior Research Fellow at Stockholm Environment Institute and Director of Science and Innovation at the Global Center on Adaptation. Richard is an internationally leading expert on the science and policy of adaptation to climate change, with more than 25 years of experience in original research, science assessment and policy advice.
Richard is the founder of the academic journal Climate and Development and was editor-in-chief from 2009–2018. He is also a member of the editorial board of the new journal Climate Services. He has been an Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change author since 1994, and was co-director and chief scientist of the Nordic Centre of Excellence for Strategic Adaptation Research (NORD-STAR) from 2011 to 2016.
Much of his recent work has addressed the role of adaptation in the design and implementation of a global climate policy agreement, but he also studies societal and institutional challenges to adaptation and to the provision and use of climate services.
Åsa Persson is Research Director and Deputy Director at Stockholm Environment Institute. As Research Director, she leads the work of the SEI Global Research Committee, which develops and oversees SEI’s core-funded research. She is also a member of the SEI Executive team.
Her recent research has focused on global governance, including the implementation of the UN Sustainable Development Goals, the global governance dimensions of climate change adaptation, and the planetary boundaries framework.
Through her research, she has provided advice and commissioned reports to many organisations, like the UN, OECD, the European Commission and the Swedish government. Her research has been published in journals such as Nature, Nature Climate Change, Environmental Science and Policy, Climate Policy, Environment and Planning C. Åsa has won several competitive research grants from the Swedish Research Council for Sustainable Development, EU, Mistra and the Swedish Research Council.
