Project-based carbon credit markets: overview, issues, and future directions

This report by SEI researcher Derik Broekhoff and The Brookings Institution provides an overview of the history, challenges, and possible future development of project-based carbon credit markets. The report describes why these markets have struggled with credibility in terms of both supply and demand, and points to ways in which enhanced governance could improve their performance and develop them into more effective tools for climate change mitigation.

Safer and more sustainable tropical fruit agriculture through integrated pest management

Tropical fruits play a key role in nutrition and food security and are especially affected by a lack of access to protection tools, driving growers to off-label pesticide use. Integrated pest management (IPM) – combining biological, cultural, physical, and chemical tools to minimize economic, health, and environmental risks – could offer a sustainable way forward.

Deforestation-focused policies do not reduce degradation in the Brazilian Amazon

The authors show that conservation policies in the Brazilian Amazon that have effectively reduced deforestation have failed to address forest degradation, which continues to harm carbon stocks, biodiversity, and ecosystem services. There is an urgent need for more comprehensive public and private policies that target both deforestation and degradation, including threats like fragmentation, fire, and logging, to effectively preserve the Amazon’s ecological health and the livelihoods it supports.
