Producing Green Steel: How Do We Get Real?

Used in industry and the transport sector, such as in cars, trucks, aviation, rail, and shipbuilding, steel is the most important construction and engineering material in modern societies. At the same time, steel has the single biggest industrial CO2 footprint at 2.6 gigatons a year in 2020, accounting for 7% of global CO2 emissions. Making steel is highly carbon intensive because transforming iron ore into steel requires high levels of energy, currently supplied by coal in most steel mills.

Unlocking a pathway to low-carbon transport in African cities without compromising economic growth

Globally, nearly a quarter of all energy-related carbon emissions come from the transport sector, making transport critical to achieving the ambitious Paris Agreement. The contribution from African countries to transport emissions has historically been low compared to the rest of the world, but they are increasing in line with increased prosperity and growing economies. This session explores how economic growth in African countries can continue without adding to CO2, in other words decoupled.

Scaling up adaptation finance to the local level will require transformational shifts in terms of the platforms used, reforms to finance architecture and sources of finance. Enhancing feedback on what is working and what is not will ensure these transformations can happen faster and more effectively. This will support the finance recipients and the women and men impacted by projects to shape developmental outcomes.
