Solar geoengineering: the case for an international non-use agreement

The authors argue against this increasing normalization of solar geoengineering as a speculative part of the climate policy portfolio.

Soil and Plant Responses to Phosphorus Inputs from Different Phytase-Associated Animal Diets

The study shows how commercial phytase levels together with higher dietary phosphorus (P) contents in pig diets contributed to increase PUE and decrease WSP, thus making the plant–soil system more P conservative (i.e., lower risks of P losses). The evidence is that dietary effects on plant–soil P dynamics are driven by the availability of P forms (for plant uptake) in animal excretes and the type of organic amendment (pig vs. broiler) rather than plant species identity (comfrey vs. ryegrass).

Christmas time is accompanied by seasonal increases in our level of consumption. From eating and drinking to giving and receiving, it is the time of year when we do things to excess. Unfortunately, it also means we are likely to have a greater impact on the environment. Find out how much you are likely to produce in terms of carbon dioxide emissions, and learn some ways you can reduce your environmental impact, while still having a wonderful time.

Safe planetary boundary for pollutants, including plastics, exceeded, say researchers

First assessment published of planetary boundary related to “novel entities” Researchers conclude the planetary boundary has now been exceeded, raising the risks to the stability of the Earth system. Authors propose that the boundary is exceeded when the pace of annual production and release outstrips government ability to assess and monitor risks. Better risk management, monitoring and reduction in production and release of pollutants needed urgently to return within the planetary boundary.

Designing for circular fashion: integrating upcycling into conventional garment manufacturing processes

Based on the results of this research, it can be said that depending on the size of the factory the textile waste and fabric leftovers generated in the garment manufacturing process ranges from 25 to 40% of the total fabric used. The results of testing of different upcycling design methods and leftover types show that 50% of that material can be upcycled into new garments and for some types of leftover—mainly spreading loss and excess fabric—it can even be up to 80%.
