The good news on NDCs is how they address health

The news on nationally determined contributions (NDCs) is that updated and new NDCs from 143 parties together would reduce emissions only by 9% below the 2010 level by 2030, while reductions of at least 30% are needed. But there is also some good news and that is in how the new and updated national climate action plans address health. Health can be a driver for more ambitious NDCs in the future and could speed up implementing existing commitments.

Seven priorities for COP26

Climate change is already affecting every region on earth, but the world can still avoid catastrophic climate change if countries reduce greenhouse gas emissions decisively and quickly. The COP26 UN climate conference gets under way in Glasgow on 31 October 2021. If ever there were a time when countries must show they are serious about climate action, this is it. Here are seven ways they can do this.

Cities worldwide are implementing circular economy strategies to reduce the resources they consume and their environmental impact. However, the evidence of intended and unintended social consequences in the transition to circular cities remains largely unaddressed. The lack of a coherent overview regarding evidence on the subject can hinder effective decision making in policy and practice.

COP26 must commit to eliminating deforestation

COP26 is a crucial moment for world leaders to put eliminating deforestation at the heart of their carbon reduction plans according to the Trase initiative and Vivian Ribeiro, data scientist for Trase. At the UN climate talks (COP26) in November, it is hoped that countries will present ambitious and actionable carbon reduction plans that limit the increase in global temperatures to 1.5°C and avoid the worst impacts of climate change from extreme weather, rising sea levels and biodiversity loss.
