New borderlands of water governance must transcend traditional boundaries

We need to rethink the old boundaries of water governance. Traditional units of governance in water management are spatial or biogeographical, watersheds, basins or catchments. Watersheds transcend political, cultural and national boundaries, but their governance is stuck in administrative settings that reflect small-scale national priorities. Those affected directly by water decision-making are left out, along with their environmental concerns.

Although, there is evidence that emissions from urban sanitation systems are major greenhouse gas (GHG) contributors, this dimension remains poorly understood. This session at World Water Week explores how best to facilitate understanding of, and opportunities for, urban sanitation-related climate financing; and prepare and implement urban sanitation projects that maximize access through resilient, low-emission systems.

Welcome to a session as part of Stockholm International Water Institute’s (SIWI) World Water Week. We will present emerging findings from a large review of gender and social equality outcomes of WASH (water, sanitation and hygiene) interventions. A panel session will lead to parallel discussions of the implications for better interventions and policies, evaluation practice and research, as well as a participatory validation of a theory of change.

This perspective illustrates why the situation exists and how to better integrate water modelling into policymaking in countries of the Asia-Pacific.

Methods and guidance on conducting, reporting, publishing and appraising living systematic reviews: a scoping review protocol

Systematic reviews (SRs) are essential to providing evidence-based answers to clinical and public health-related questions. Due to the continuous publishing of relevant primary studies in some areas, it is important to keep these SRs up to date. The living systematic review (LSR) approach, which is based on ongoing surveillance of the literature and continual updating, is a good way to do this. However, few guidance documents exist on how to undertake LSRs.

Spatial analysis of water quality and income in Europe

Good water quality is crucial to human health, social and economic development as well as the functioning of ecosystems. Despite restrictions on polluting activities and enhanced wastewater management, progress on improving water quality in the EU has been slow. Income is often seen as a major driver of human impact on water quality. However, it is unclear whether simply raising income levels will be sufficient for solving water quality problems.

A commodity supply mix for more regionalized life cycle assessments

Life cycle assessment (LCA) is an approach used to calculate the potential environmental impacts of a product over the course of its life cycle. Supply chain information is essential for LCAs, but there are few detailed assessments of production and consumption practices for specific regions. This study introduces the commodity supply mix (CSM), which relies on mapping national or international supply chains, as a way to gain a deeper understanding of these issues.
