How can socio-economic transitions be better managed? Lessons from four historical cases of industrial transition

This report uses four case studies from across the globe to draw lessons on how cities and regions can equitably manage the decline of major industrial and mining activities and minimize disruption to local economies. It finds commonalities among decarbonization transitions in Australia, the United States, the United Kingdom and South Africa, expanding the scope of success from simply closing industries to including social and economic equity in the transition process.

This article presents methods for managing data-sharing processes to make it easier to produce synthesis-ready research. The authors advocate for changes in research practices that focus on synthesizability to reduce delays in implementing effective primary-study approaches. They argue that adopting such methods would have a positive impact on the translation of prevention science into policies and practices.

A multi-country meta-analysis on the role of behavioural change in reducing energy consumption and CO2 emissions in residential buildings

Energy demand from residential buildings was responsible for 28% of global energy-related CO2 emissions in 2019. Addressing these current trends is crucial to finding responsible, low-energy pathways for climate change mitigation. However, there is a lack of research assessing the impacts of interventions designed to reduce energy demand in residential buildings.

Labour, waste and the circular economy in Bangkok

Without the informal economy, there would be no waste recycling in most Asian cities. In many Asian countries, waste management systems are underdeveloped, with the informal economy dominating the processes of waste collection, sorting and recycling. In this short report, we present preliminary findings from our survey of 34 waste pickers in Bangkok. The report sheds light on their working conditions, health risks, gendered dimensions and the challenges they face in waste recycling.

Our planet is becoming increasingly urban. According to the UN, over half of the global population now live in urban areas. Africa has been part of this global trend with its urban population growing at a rapid rate. This shift has had a transformative impact on the continent. The World Bank considers urbanization “the single most important transformation that the African continent will undergo this century”.

This paper presents socio-economic scenarios for the Caribbean. While developed within the region, a novel technique was used to link them to global scenario narratives and models from the climate community: the representative concentration pathways (RCPs) and the shared socio-economic pathways (SSPs). The regional scenarios are applied to the specific case of water demand in the Barbados tourism sector. The study found significant impacts on water demand arising from socio-economic factors.

The health and well-being of future generations are bound to the fate of the planet. A 4°C warmer world will have catastrophic and wide-ranging effects on social, ecological and economic systems, and impacts will be disproportionately felt in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs) in the ‘Global South’. In fact, climate change is already having devastating effects across the globe, and the need for transformative climate action is urgent.
