Toby Gardner, Senior Research Fellow at SEI and Director of the transparency initiative Trase, told Arab News that the recent fires were “extremely worrying.”

“Whilst the Amazon has seen more devastating fires in the past what is most worrying is that the current fires – which are much more widespread than normal – are occurring in a year that is not particularly dry. This points to the fact that the primary cause of the fires is deforestation, which has increased markedly in the last year, and not drought,” Gardner said.

“Most importantly, nobody should be deceived into thinking that these fires are somehow normal, a narrative that has been pushed by some members of Brazil´s current administration.”
