Climate Project Intern

SEI Tallinn is looking for a motivated intern to support the Climate Systems and Energy Policy Unit in projects and funding proposals related to weather, water and climate.

Full-time/part-time internship
Minimum six weeks, maximum six months

The internship may include desk research and communication tasks, as well as data processing, analysis, interpretation and visualization. Interns will contribute to work on risk, resilience and adaptation aimed at science, administrative bodies and communities.

During the internship, tasks with varying deadlines will be assigned, ranging from short-term assignments to those spanning the entire internship duration.

Potential responsibilities

Urban climate analysis:

  • Support the Regions4Climate project by analysing urban heat islands in Pärnu using observation data from SEI Tallinn’s urban weather sensor network of 50 stations.
  • Analyse urban heat data and the effects of nature-based solutions (e.g. for a specific street) using microclimate simulation tools such as SOLWEIG, ENVI-met or others.

Funding and research support:

  • Assist in preparing funding applications for Horizon Europe and other programs.
  • Conduct desk research tasks (including AI-based tools) on various topics, such as those within the ClimaResponse project.
  • Contribute to publications and review literature to align SEI’s work with international research.

Climate risk and adaptation:

  • Update an inventory of European and national climate risk and adaptation tools.
  • Assist in organizing a webinar/networking event within the Adaptation AGORA project.
  • Support assessments of climate adaptation needs in Estonia and the Eastern Partnership countries.

Water projects and communication:

  • Assist with ongoing water-related projects as needed.
  • Engage with relevant stakeholders, SEI colleagues and external experts.
  • Provide input for social media posts and other communication channels.

Required skills and experience

  • Education and/or strong interest and experience in meteorology, climatology, geography, physics, geoinformatics or related fields.
  • Beneficial technical skills:
    • programming skills to analyse large datasets
    • experience in microclimate simulation tools (e.g. ENVI-met, SOLWEIG or others)
    • GIS skills to visualize large datasets
  • Fluency in spoken and written English

While internships are generally open to everyone, priority is given to motivated, matriculated university students, for whom an internship is either part of their curriculum or a thesis project.
