Research Associate

SEI is an international research organization conducting policy-relevant environmental research around the world. Our York Centre is based at the University of York in the Department of Environment and Geography. We have a strong academic track record as well as an international reputation of producing highly credible evidence-based science policy research.

You will join an interdisciplinary team investigating the impacts of the environment on health and well-being including interactions with transport and mobility challenges. We require a social science researcher to support in the implementation of projects undertaking community engagement, policy evaluation, synthesis and action research. Your time will initially be focused upon a large project investigating low-carbon transport in Indonesia. Your work will be key part of a £2.75m UK Partnering for Accelerated Climate Transitions (UKPACT) funded project being undertaken with international partners including UNEP and Indonesian City researchers.

Role

You will use existing qualitative and social science skills to assist in action research in Indonesia developing a toolkit for participatory journey mapping with vulnerable communities. You will also undertake a policy assessment and develop recommendations for national and subnational governments to:

• Reduce transport emissions focused on promoting active travel and transit orientated developments
• Promote safety for women and other marginalized groups accessing public transport

Your findings will provide technical support and build capacity of national and sub-national Indonesian government, community groups and NGOs to accelerate low carbon transport policies and plans meeting the mobility needs of marginalized groups (especially women). This community focused mapping and advocacy work will be concentrated on the ground in the city of Greater Medan. This is a fixed-term contract for 24 months.

Skills, Experience & Qualification needed

• PhD in human geography, social science, transport studies or an allied discipline, or equivalent experience
• Knowledge of transport and development issues; policy evaluation; and qualitative research, including participatory techniques and methodologies
• Attention to detail and commitment to high quality research with an interest and enthusiasm for projects the focus
• Ability to write up research findings for different audiences including policy makers and for publication in high profile journals and online articles
• Highly developed communication skills to engage effectively with a wide-ranging audience (including the general public), both orally and in writing, using a range of media
• Competency to conduct individual and collaborative research projects as well as to make presentations at conferences or exhibit work in other appropriate events
• Ability to work as part of a team with a collaborative ethos or independently when required using own initiative
• Positive attitude to colleagues and students
• Willingness to work proactively with colleagues in other work areas/institutions
