Water Expert

SEI Tallinn is inviting applications for a full-time Water Expert within its Climate Systems and Energy Policy Unit, focusing on hydrology and impacts of climate change on water systems.

The successful candidate will have a strong background in interdisciplinary research or policymaking/implementation and the ability to work effectively with diverse stakeholders. This role requires a deep understanding of both development and environmental issues, consistent with SEI’s mission, and the ability to perform independent analysis and enrich the creative research environment at SEI Tallinn.

The role

The Water Expert will engage in ongoing water projects, including those aimed at enhancing wastewater treatment in coastal areas with varying loads and advancing novel lake water treatment technologies. This position also offers the chance to influence the development of the unit’s project portfolio and thematic scope based on SEI’s strategy, and to undertake national and international research and policy support projects.

SEI Tallinn operates as part of an international non-profit research institute with eight centres worldwide, advancing sustainable development through research, policy analysis and capacity building. Reporting to the head of unit, this role involves conducting independent research with a significant emphasis on water and climate change mitigation policy sectors. Collaboration with other units and centres is highly encouraged.

Key responsibilities

  • Develop a strong, visible and lasting research portfolio in water policy.
  • Support the team’s involvement in water-related topics and climate projects, demonstratinga deep understanding of the field’s key issues.
  • Engage with policymakers and stakeholders and represent SEI Tallinn at key events.
  • Assist in fundraising from diverse local and international sources, including the private sector.
  • Coordinate resource planning and timesheet management to support ongoing and furture projects.
  • Actively participate delivering high-quality research outputs.

Who you are

You possess strong project management and research skills and have experience working collaboratively on project teams, contributing to dynamic team goals. You should have a background in water and climate-related policymaking, with a solid understanding of the broader climate and energy context.

Key qualifications and experience

  • A minimum of three years in a relevant research, policymaking or data analysis positionA Master’s degree in a field relevant to water policy research. We define water policy research broadly and are open to receiving applications from those with degrees in climate, engineering or natural sciences.
  • A minimum of three years in a relevant research, policymaking or data analysis position.
  • Ability to support high-level policymaking.
  • Experience in research project design and management, securing funding and publishing findings.
  • Excellent communication skills in English, suitable for both technical and public audiences.
  • Quantitative skills, such as data analysis, statistical analysis, data visualization and/or computer programming, are highly regarded.
  • Experience working in international multidisciplinary research teams and proficiency in Estonian and understanding of the Estonian context are advantageous.
