Lars-Erik Liljelund is an SEI Associate based in Stockholm, starting 1 May 2014. Lars-Erik holds a PhD in Plant Ecology since 1977 from University of Stockholm. He has been a member of the Royal Academy of Forestry and Agriculture since 1999.
During the last three decades Liljelund has served in a number of roles in national and international environmental authorities, organisations, conventions, negotiation teams and task-forces. Most recently he was executive director of The Swedish Foundation for Strategic Environmental Research – Mistra – (2010-2014) and was earlier member of the foundation board.
He was Director General in the Swedish Prime minister’s Office 2008 – 2010 and the PM:s special envoy on climate change. He was Director General of the Swedish Environmental Protection Agency 1999-2008 and Chair of the Management Board of the European Environmental Agency (EEA) 2002-2007.
Between 2008 and 2016 he was vice Chair of ICIMOD Board of Governors – the intergovernmental cooperation in the Hindu Kush-Himalayan region – and chair of ICIMOD Programme Advisory Committee. Since 2006 he is member of China Council for International Cooperation on Environment and Development – CCICED.
