CAST

Circular and Sustainable Steel Transitions (CAST) is a continuation of the work done by SEI and Lund University in the Hydrogen Breakthrough Ironmaking Technology (HYBRIT) project, exploring the steel market and the policy environment necessary for a transition to fossil-free steel production.

Active project

2022–2025

Overview

The steel industry accounts for 7–9% of CO2 emissions globally. In keeping with the goals of the Paris Agreement, the EU, and the Swedish Climate Act, global steel sector emissions should reach net zero between 2045 and 2060.

However, the conditions on the way to reaching that goal vary greatly throughout the globe. Building on the results of the HYBRIT research project, together with Lund University, we will be analysing the steel market and the policy environment necessary for the global transition to fossil-free steel production.

This research will help decision-makers in the private and the public sectors to better understand, navigate and influence the factors and the policy shaping the transition to fossil-free steel production.

Partners

The project is being carried out from 2022–2025 with Lund University and is funded by the Swedish Energy Agency.
