Connecting water access with multidimensional poverty: the case of Tupiza River Basin in Bolivia

In developing countries, where economic expansion depends on extractive activities such as agriculture and mining, water quantity and quality considerations need to be examined in tandem with GDP growth and poverty reduction efforts. This study analyses water access and poverty linkages in Bolivia’s Tupiza River Basin using the Multidimensional Poverty Analysis (MDPA) framework and assesses how watershed policy can work to reduce poverty and inequality.

Questioning the scientific feasibility and policy relevance of assessing transboundary climate risks

Climate policies need to be better prepared to deal with transboundary climate risks resulting from the cascading effects of both climate hazards and adaptation responses. However, this requires asking whether scientific knowledge is available on transboundary climate risks and political willingness there, write SEI Senior Research Fellow Richard J. T. Klein, Research Fellow Magnus Benzie and Senior Policy Fellow and Adaptation Without Borders Director Katy Harris in a recent IDDRI blog post.

RECLAMO: the contribution of water reuse to a resource-efficient and sustainable water management for irrigation

Researchers in this project explore alternatives to pumping depleted aquifers for crop irrigation in Spain. Wastewater reuse is an attractive option, but its practice still lags behind national goals and may even conflict with environmental and recreational water uses. This project uses a hydro-economic model to explore the potential for reclaimed water reuse in agriculture and effective water resource management in this highly water-stressed country.
