Palm oil deforestation falls in Indonesia, but price surge and growth in exporters with lower standards still putting forests at risk

New Trase data reveals a fall in deforestation linked to Indonesian palm oil exports between 2018 and 2020. Where exporters have zero-deforestation commitments (ZDCs), their supply chains are consistently linked to less deforestation. However, the sector’s success may be fragile amid price rises and an increasing market share being captured by suppliers with comparatively poor performance on forests and transparency.

However, rising palm oil prices and the growing role of traders who have lower levels of public transparency threaten to undermine progress.

Decarbonizing the EU’s road and construction sectors through green public procurement: the case of Estonia and Poland

Both Estonia and Poland have recognized the benefits of mandatory green public procurement (GPP) policies. While the countries have set goals to increase environmentally friendly procurement, they have not set any mandates to make these happen. As part of a series on GPP in the EU, this policy brief compares the policies in Estonia and Poland, with a focus on the road and construction sectors, both of which can go a long way toward cutting the countries’ greenhouse gas emissions.
