In global discussions on the future of the planet amid the growing needs of current and future generations, the case of Africa brings a unique perspective. Often referred to as the world’s most youthful continent, sub-Saharan Africa alone is projected to be home to approximately 2 billion people by 2050, half of them under 25. In 2020, the median age of Africa’s population was 19.7, a significant gap compared to all other continents. By 2100, the median age for Africa is projected to be 35.

The operability of the ensembled tools is made considering two-way feedback between them, i.e., the tools are not fully integrated. A tool called Comprehensive Participatory Decision-Making (CPDM) was developed as the integration center to support the institutional framework of watershed management in Bolivia.

Net carbon dioxide exchange in a hyperseasonal cattle pasture in the northern Pantanal wetland of Brazil

The Pantanal is the largest seasonal wetland in the world with a landscape that consists of a mosaic of permanent aquatic habitats, and floodable and non-floodable savannas, pastures and forests. Drought events are expected to occur more frequently in the Pantanal biome under future climate conditions, but the effects of land management and hydrological extremes on pastures have been poorly studied at relevant spatial scales. Better livestock management could limit carbon releases in the biome.

SAMHE (pronounced ‘Sammy’) stands for Schools’ Air quality Monitoring for Health and Education. It is a citizen science project that has been designed with and for UK schools. SAMHE aims to establish a network of air quality monitors in schools across the UK to help us better understand schools’ indoor air quality. This is important because poor air quality can have impacts on pupils’ health and concentration levels.
