The main cause of global warming is the increased concentration of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere (carbon dioxide CO2, methane, nitrous oxide and fluorinated gases). Each gas has a different warming potential, or capacity to absorb energy during the time that it stays in the atmosphere, and to allow for simpler analysis they are all converted to a common reference, CO2, and therefore expressed in CO2-equivalent...

What the climate crisis needs: the world’s youth

This perspective, originally published by Thomson Reuters Foundation News, argues that world leaders are handicapping progress by failing to involve the world’s youth. The author, SEI Oxford Research Associate Robin Hocquet, is one of the 12 authors of the youth-led “Charting a youth vision for a just and sustainable future” report, which builds on the insights from a global survey of young people on climate change-related issues. The work was commissioned for the Stockholm+50 Conference.

The coffee supply chain illustrates transboundary climate risks: Insights on governance pathways

Coffee has inextricably linked countries around the world through deeply ingrained trade pathways that criss-cross the globe. This means that climate risks to the coffee crop are also shared across borders and because coffee is highly vulnerable to the effects of a changing climate, those risks must be managed across companies and governments. Using the Brazilian-German coffee supply chain as an example, this brief explores the options for how best to manage these risks.

Uganda’s ambitions to become a middle-income country by 2040 require an economic transformation that is led and aided by industrialization. This economic transformation and industrialization require efficient utilization of energy, including electricity. The cost of electricity in Uganda however, is not cheap; thus, there is an incentive for industries and policymakers to invest in energy efficiency measures.
