New project uncovers the impact of small urban green spaces

In rapidly growing cities, small urban green spaces – often called “pocket parks” – are emerging as vital spaces for community health and social wellbeing. But how exactly do these compact green spaces benefit local communities, and what types of park designs are most effective in fostering social health?

Dichotomy or continuum? A global review of the interaction between autonomous and planned adaptations

This research challenges the traditional dichotomy between autonomous and planned climate adaptation by proposing a third category, “mixed adaptation,” which combines elements of both. This study reveals that mixed adaptation is prevalent across sectors and regions, underscoring the need to view adaptation as a continuum. A new typology identifies nine interaction patterns, offering insights into how blended approaches can create effective, scalable, and locally relevant adaptation strategies.

Proximity to garbage disposal sites was found to be associated with incidence of both dengue and skin infections, and lack of adequate sanitation and clean water is a hypothesized driver for skin infections.

Nature-based solutions (NBS) have potential to reduce hazard from infectious disease through filtering water, mitigating flooding and reducing urban temperatures. Local actors participating in project workshops were particularly interested in applying green streets and rainwater harvesting in Bharatpur.

Strengthening solid waste management is recommended as a priority action to reduce hazard from dengue, by increasing collection frequency and ensuring city-wide provision of municipal collection services. Improving piped water supply to peri-urban areas is recommended as a priority action to improve hygiene, reduce skin infections and address critical health inequities among vulnerable populations.

The study emphasizes that to improve public health outcomes from infectious disease, NBS cannot substitute for basic urban infrastructure and services.

In February, the Maximising UK Adaptation to Climate Change (MACC) Hub launched. It is a landmark initiative to devise strategies to help the UK make changes needed to better adapt to the impacts of climate change. The launch event itself sparked discussion about key issues shaping the UK adaptation agenda, and solicited ideas about the priorities that should drive the work ahead. Here, partners in the Hub program offer five takeaways:
