Biofuels to the rescue

As part of the Global Bioeconomy Summit 2026 in Dublin, SEI’s Francis X. Johnson will speak at “Biofuels to the rescue: the cross-sectoral integrative role of biofuels for energy security, climate stabilization and resilient infrastructure within a sustainable bioeconomy”, a panel exploring how biofuels can accelerate a sustainable bioeconomy, alongside experts from Imperial College London and Renetech Bioresources.

19 October 2026 at 11:00 CEST

ending at 12:30 CEST

The current energy crisis illustrates how a high dependence on a fossil economy is not only damaging the climate but also contributes to deepening inequality and a lack of security for food, fertilizers, materials, and energy. Biofuels are among the key mechanisms to provide the “glue” that binds together different applications, sectors and systems in advancing a sustainable bioeconomy. This cross-cutting and integrative role has often been overlooked due to debates around the use of food crops for biofuels. The wide range of cost-effective and low-emissions biofuel platforms and systems available can overcome these constraints. This session aims to foster dialogue on investment, sustainability governance, and practical pathways for accelerating the transition to biofuels in the context of the Sustainability, Availability, Scalability (S.A.S) framework. Topics and issues to be highlighted in presentations/discussions at this event include:

  • Biofuel feedstock and potential within the context of climate and development aims
  • Sustainability assessment, standards, certification, and monitoring
  • Evolving regional perspectives and strategies amidst geopolitical tensions
  • Market scope and demand for Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) and maritime fuel
  • Potential for Liquified Biogas (LBG) in decarbonizing heavy-duty transport
  • Role and sustainability of drop-in fuels for road transport and agriculture
  • Key linkages with bioeconomy developments at national and regional levels

Moderator: Tom Walsh, CEO, Renetech Bioresources Ltd

Speakers and panellists:

  • Rocio Diaz-Chavez, Senior Research Fellow, Imperial College, Centre for Energy Policy (CEP)
  • Francis Johnson, Senior Research Fellow, Stockholm Environment Institute (SEI)
  • David Bauner, CTO, Renetech Bioresources Ltd
  • Others to be confirmed
