Which trends will shape 2026? And what will shape these trends?
SEI hosted its fifth installation of Currents, the webinar exploring the forces that will shape the year ahead. On 29 January, SEI experts analysed what 2026 may bring: the major shifts that can be anticipated, and the subtle undercurrents that could steer the world in unexpected directions.
As multiple crises converge, understanding the complex interlinkages is critical, between issues such as changing climate, growing geopolitical tensions, emerging disruptive technologies, and growing pressure on the natural world. With 35 years of interdisciplinary research practices, SEI researchers are well placed to unpack the web of challenges the world is facing, drawing on insights from eight centres across five continents.
SEI Currents 2026 highlighted trends and then delved deeper into the options to address emerging risks and build a more resilient future – locally, regionally and globally.
To go further, SEI researchers unpack the major topics from the webinar in a series of focused perspectives on the year ahead.
Perspective / Inequality is testing the limits of climate action as policymakers confront tougher trade-offs in 2026.
Perspective / As public funding shrinks, private finance faces growing pressure to deliver on sustainable development.
Perspective / The ocean is becoming both a climate solution and a geopolitical battleground in 2026.
