Powerful Futures is the first collective work of JustRE, the Global South Alliance for a Just Transition to Renewable Energy (JustRE). This book explores the complexities of making renewable energy transitions just and draws on real-world experiences from regions deeply engaged in these efforts.
The conversation about just energy transition has largely focused on the phasing-out of fossil fuels, resulting in a gap in research and discussion about the impacts and best practices in the phasing-in of utility-scale renewable energy. This book aims to bridge this important gap by showcasing — from a Global South perspective — promising emerging inclusive practices drawn from the experience of JustRE members.
Powerful Futures: Practitioner Insights on the Just Transition to Renewable Energy is a guide by practitioners for practitioners who are committed to ensuring that the global shift to renewable energy is equitable and inclusive. The book gathers the expertise and experiences of organizations and initiatives from Latin America, Africa, and South and Southeast Asia dedicated to championing social responsibility in renewable energy projects.
This book explores the complexities of making renewable energy transitions just and equitable, drawing on real-world experiences from regions deeply engaged in these efforts. The authors address multifaceted justice issues throughout the lifecycle of renewable energy projects, aiming to equip practitioners with insights and tools to navigate the transition’s challenges and opportunities.
The authors explore key themes: responsible land and water management, responsible supply chains, effective community engagement, and fair benefit-sharing mechanisms. They also address the importance of multistakeholder governance, emphasizing the need for collaboration between public institutions, the private sector, and communities to achieve shared goals. These discussions are followed by reflections on enabling factors, including policies and practice standards, and an outlook on future work and the role of JustRE.
The aim is not to present theoretical discussions, but to offer a practical resource to inspire and guide practitioners in their work. Each chapter offers actionable lessons drawn from practical experience and several case studies. By sharing the authors’ experience in Colombia, India, Kenya, Mexico, the Philippines and South Africa, they hope to contribute to the global conversation on renewable energy and justice, offering a Global South perspective often underrepresented in these discussions.
