Joe is currently conducting a PhD research project within SEI and the Department of Mathematics at the University of York.
The project employs graph theory and network science to build models that simulate the growth of trade networks and commodity supply chains. The research uses these models to assess the sustainability and resilience of the global food system to geopolitical and climate-driven shocks as well as simulate possible outcomes of policy interventions aiming to reduce the overseas environmental footprint of domestic production and consumption.
Joe has previously contributed to the CASCADES project (2019-2023) that investigated the risks of cross-border climate change impacts and possible mitigation and adaptation efforts. He has also worked with WWF to analyse data collected by their carbon footprint calculator tool.
Joe holds an MChem in Chemistry and an MSc in Sustainability and Behaviour Change. Outside of his research area, Joe is interested in Classical political economy, geopolitics, economic history and sociolinguistics.
