The new EU Directive on single-use plastics prohibits the use of disposable glasses, plates, bags, straws, dishes, cutlery, packaging and many other items used daily.

SEI Research Associate Eleni Michalopoulou explains:

“Why are such directives being introduced? This is a very good step forward, it transfers the problems into an officially normative context, to the highest level of regulation, and enables stakeholders to take action to solve the problem. But as in any such situation, it takes some time to adapt the changes before they are fully implemented.”

The news item highlights other measures to reduce the consumption of plastic products and waste.
