Anderson Kehbila

Senior Research Fellow/Research Director for Africa

Anderson Kehbila is a seasoned scholar and research leader with deep expertise in environmental sustainability, climate change, and natural resource management, and a proven track record in directing high-impact research and decision-support systems that advance low-carbon, climate-resilient development across Africa. His work is reflected in an extensive publication record of more than 50 peer-reviewed articles, book chapters, policy briefs, and professional reports in these thematic areas.

Since January 2026, Anderson has served as a Senior Research Fellow at SEI Africa and as the Research Director for Africa, providing strategic leadership for high-impact research and decision-support systems that advance sustainable development and climate resilience across Africa. Currently, Anderson also serves as the Cluster Lead for Energy and Climate Change at SEI-Africa, a role he assumed in 2022, leading interdisciplinary teams on energy and emissions modelling, air quality management, climate risks assessment, climate economics and adaptation planning, climate finance, and disaster risk management and early warning systems. Previously, Anderson served from 2021 to 2025 as the Cluster Lead for Natural Resources and Ecosystems at SEI Africa, directing research projects on Water-Energy-Food-Ecosystem (WEFE) nexus modeling to advance integrated natural resource management, alongside nature-based solutions for climate adaptation and ecosystem-based disaster risk reduction.

In addition to these leadership roles, Anderson has been the Global Environmental Sustainability Coordinator at SEI since 2021, coordinating the Institute’s Global Environmental Sustainability Initiative across 8 satellite offices in Europe, the USA, Asia, Latin America, and Africa. Before this appointment, he was a Postdoctoral Fellow at SEI Africa from 2019 to 2020 under the Climate Research for Development (CR4D) Programme funded by the United Kingdom Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO, formerly DFID).

Prior to joining SEI, Anderson was the Program Director for Environment, Climate, and Natural Resources at EcoXergy Solutions, Canada, from 2017 to 2021, where he developed and implemented programs to enhance climate resilience and sustainable resource management in Africa. Previously, he was a Regional Scientist on Agricultural Systems Intensification with the International Institute of Tropical Agriculture in the Democratic Republic of Congo from 2014 to 2017, where he coordinated research and innovations in sustainable agriculture and food systems.

Anderson has worked in Germany, Canada, and several other African countries, where he researched, consulted, and collaborated with international NGOs, multilateral, and private-sector organizations, including Felber and Associés, FCDO, UNEP, CCAC, FORMAS, AWF, ICRAF, USAID, AfDB, the World Bank, European Climate Foundation, and Natural Resources Canada. Throughout his career, Anderson has demonstrated a strong commitment to applied research, interdisciplinary collaboration, and the translation of science into actionable policies and programs that address the pressing environmental and climate challenges facing Africa and the global community.

Anderson holds a PhD in Environment and Natural Resources Management from the Brandenburg University of Technology, Germany, and a Master’s degree in business administration (MBA) from Simon Fraser University, Canada. He is a certified Service Organization Energy Manager by Natural Resources Canada, a certified Occupational Health and Safety Professional by the OSHAcademy, Oregon, USA, and a certified Greenhouse Gas Accounting and Reporting Professional by the US Department of Energy, USA. He is currently embarking on a Certified Energy Manager course offered by the Association of Energy Engineers, Atlanta, USA.
