James W. Hansen, Ph.D., is an Affiliated Researcher with SEI US.
He is a Senior Research Scientist at Columbia University’s International Research Institute for Climate and Society, where he has worked since 1999. As an agricultural systems scientist, James’s work focuses on strengthening the use of climate information and climate risk management interventions to boost agricultural livelihoods and food security in the developing world.
His current work centers on agricultural climate services, climate-smart agricultural practices and curriculum to help current and future agricultural professionals in sub-Saharan Africa to manage agricultural risk.
From 2009 to 2019, James served on the leadership team of the CGIAR research program on Climate, Agriculture and Food Security, leading its Flagship Program on Climate Services and Safety Nets.
He holds a bachelor’s degree in General Tropical Agriculture and a master’s degree in Agronomy and Soil Science from the University of Hawaii and a Ph.D. in Agricultural and Biological Engineering from the University of Florida. He resides in Woodbury, New York.
