Joe Simpson

Research Assistant

Joe is currently conducting a PhD research project within SEI and the Department of Mathematics at the University of York.

The project focusses on the use of MRIO and CGE models to assess the environment impact of consumption and production. The research seeks to develop novel approaches to modelling that simulate policy interventions aiming to reduce the overseas environmental footprint of domestic production and consumption. The project will also employ graph theory and network analysis to assess the sustainability and resilience of global food supply chains.

Joe has previously contributed to the CASCADES project (2019-2023) that investigated the risks of cross-border climate change impacts and possible mitigation and adaptation efforts. He has also worked with WWF to analyse data collected by their carbon footprint calculator tool.

Joe holds an MChem in Chemistry and an MSc in Sustainability and Behaviour Change. Outside of his research area, Joe is interested in Classical political economy, geopolitics, economic history and sociolinguistics.
