Patricio Calles Almeida is a Research Assistant at SEI Latin America. He supports the center’s work on just transitions beyond fossil fuels through initiatives that include approaches to science, technology, and innovation for sustainable development and efforts around carbon lock-in.
He holds an MSc in Energy Policy from the Science Policy Research Unit at the University of Sussex, UK, and a BSc in Chemical Engineering and Environmental Systems from Tecnológico de Monterrey, Mexico. Patricio has worked in the Latin American private energy sector in roles involving energy markets and infrastructure intelligence. He also has experience developing regional energy hubs and public policy pathways alongside National Energy Companies and regulators. Before joining SEI, he participated in research projects around climate change and the decarbonization of agricultural supply chains.
Patricio combines his professional and academic backgrounds to support strategic decision-making towards decarbonization, focusing on a perspective that accounts for justice and the political economy of the energy transition. He is particularly interested in developing and applying a regional integration approach to technology transfer and natural resource management
