PATHWAYS – Exploring transition pathways to sustainable, low carbon societies

The PATHWAYS (European Commission funded, FP7) project addresses how the ambitious EU policy goals to move to sustainable, resource efficient, low-carbon and climate-resilient and biodiversity rich societies requires substantial transitions in the energy system and land-use and food systems.

The project combines three different scientific approaches offer different perspectives on transitions:

  • integrated assessment analysis with systems-wide analysis from IAM models;
  • transitions studies analysing societal and technological developments of transitions as dynamic, multi-scale processes;
  • participative action research providing real-world insights from local examples of developments toward more sustainable patterns.

The project covers a broad range of sectors analysing case studies related to the power system, transport, household energy use, food production and consumption and bio-energy, but focus down on transitions-in-the-making (specific projects) in a selected set of selected European cities and regions. The main outputs will be scenarios in the form of transition pathways, and methods to assess progress on these pathways, towards the EU policy goals on sustainability transitions.
