Human health and security in urban areas is increasingly under threat from extreme waters, e.g. floods & droughts. The WASH & Rescue project focuses on the preventive actions needed for WASH (water, sanitation and hygiene) systems in resilient cities.

The aim is to develop a risk assessment which includes a more holistic approach, taking into account broader social and environmental factors. The aim is also to investigate effective social learning mechanisms (SL) between stakeholders (political decision makers, NGOs, INGOs, experts and researchers, the public, etc.) to speed up learning about accepted adaptations (e.g. for infrastructure, building standards, regulation, urban planning, education, management of ecosystem services and land use in the river basin etc.).
The project will make use of experience from recent and recurring disasters and floods for example in Haiti, Mozambique, India and Sweden.
