This policy brief presents findings from a major study that investigated how to realize the potential of agricultural biosciences and agro-processing innovation in Eastern Africa, and empower small-scale farming.
The study evaluated ways to strengthen the ability of, and options for, public institutions to adapt biosciences to local needs, as well as traditional African crops and agroprocessing systems. A central issue was to investigate to what extent public institutions in Eastern Africa can move beyond research and forge formal links with other parts of the innovation chain.
The brief sets out a number of possible pathways to success that can be followed by governments and the private sector in the region.
