Board

SEI’s board composition is international, and its members are appointed by the Swedish Government. According to SEI statutes, the Board is responsible for deciding on the long-term goals and strategy of the institute; ensuring proper management and control of finance, organization and administration; appointing the Executive Director; and approving the annual budget of the SEI foundation. One SEI employee representative is a non-voting member of the Board.

Former Co-Chair of the UN Green Climate Fund (GCF). Former Board Member and acting DG of Sida. Former President of IFAD (International Fund for Agricultural Development). 40 years of extensive experience in international development cooperation focused on: poverty reduction, rural development and popular participation, agriculture, economic and social reform, research funding, environmental and climate issues, and science and technology. Have chaired multiple intergovernmental or intra- UN Executive Boards, Committees, or Councils since 1994.

Kristin Halvorsen, Vice Chairperson

Director of CICERO – Centre for International Climate and Environmental Research located in Oslo, Norway. Former politician and member of the Stoltenberg’s Second Cabinet from 2005-2013. Norway’s first female Finance Minister 2005-2009 and Minister of Knowledge 2009-2013.  Conducts extensive lecturing activities on behalf of CICERO on climate issues and has been particularly concerned with climate risks for the financial sector.

Former CEO of Alecta, Sweden. More than 20 years of experience within the international financial and insurance markets, 18 years in executive roles in multinational public entities. Holds a degree in law from Stockholm University, was a member of the EU Commission’s High Level Expert Group on sustainable finance. He sits on the board of directors of Swedish Council on Sustainable and Financial Reporting, and the advisory board of Swedish House of Finance.

Former President of the Republic of Estonia from 2016 to 2021. Recognized in 2017 as one of the 100 most powerful women according to Forbes. In 2021, UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres appointed Kersti Kaljulaid to the position of Global Advocate for the “Every woman Every Child” strategy on the health and well-being of women, children, and adolescents around the world for two years.

Professor of Environmental Policy, former Director of the International Institute for Industrial Environmental Economics (IIIEE). Professor Mickwitz research has focused on environmental and sustainability policy; how policy can be evaluated, how innovations arise and, in particular, how systemic changes towards sustainability can be supported.

President of the German Environment Agency since 2020. Co-Director of the Centre of Global Cooperation Research at the University of Duisburg-Essen. Previously served as Director of the Institute for Environment and Human Security of the United Nations University in Bonn  – Germany. Professor Messner is an internationally recognized expert on globalisation, global governance, transformation pathways to sustainability, decarbonisation of the global economy, and international cooperation and societal change.

Former Director General and CEO of International Centre of Insect Physiology and Ecology (ICIPE) in Nairobi, Kenya. Dr. Kelemu is the first woman to lead ICIPE. In 2018, the Women Economic Forum awarded Dr. Kelemu their highest award “Woman of the Decade in Natural and Sustainable Ecosystems” for outstanding leadership. Serves in various Boards, science advisory panels in major global initiatives and has served in international juries of key science awards.
