ERASuD, comprising of 12 leading European research organizations, was officially launched in Brussels as the EU deliberates the allocation of up to EUR 200 billion for its upcoming Framework Programme for Research and Innovation (FP10).

The Alliance is urging the EU to deepen collaboration with LMIC research institutions and embed these efforts within the EU Global Gateway’s 360° approach, where education and research are integral components.

It is a great honour and privilege to be part of the ERASuD alliance. The alliance is a perfect match and links with SEI's research performed at our regional centers in Africa, Latin America, and Asia."

SEI Executive Director Måns Nilsson

We want to see EU policies bring about meaningful and transformative change that will benefit everyone. We are convinced that such changes are both possible and imperative. Collaborative research on global challenges is essential to shape a more sustainable future – both for Europe and for low- and middle-income countries, Nilsson continued.

The Alliance is driven by the values and principles of co-construction, equity, inclusiveness, diversity, ethics, integrity, and inter- and transdisciplinarity, which are at the core of sustainability science.

At an event held at the European Parliament in Brussels, representatives from European research organizations, LMICs, the European Commission and UNESCO gathered to hear ERASuD’s appeal.

While we fully understand the need for Europe to align its research efforts to its new reaffirmed political priorities and in particular its sustainable competitiveness, strategic autonomy and economic security, one must not forget that this cannot happen in isolation, said Nilsson.

SEI Executive Director Måns Nilsson

Sustained efforts to mobilize resources to tackle global challenges through collaborative research with our partners from LMICs should continue to be a must. Both discussions on the FP10 and on the contribution of research to the EU Global gateway offer excellent opportunities to contribute to a common future, Nilsson summarized.

  • Abou Amani, Director of the Division of Water Sciences at UNESCO, said: “The global challenges we face need partnership. ERASus is a much-needed initiative in emphasizing the systemic power imbalances and foster transformative partnership. This alliance can accelerate progress in achieving shared goals.”
