In the presence of Bernd Hackmann, UNFCCC secretariat, Lars Ronnås, Swedish Ambassador for Climate Change and Wills Agricole, Principal Secretary at the Ministry of Environment and Energy, Seychelles; the Stockholm Environment Institute (SEI) and the German Development Institute (DIE) will present new findings on the connections between the NDC’s under the Paris Agreement and the 2030 Agenda.
Focusing on the Small Island Developing States (SIDS), this event highlights the links between climate change and sustainable development and their connection to national development priorities. On 17 November, new findings from a recently published analysis will be presented. Therein, activities formulated in all countries’ NDCs have been set in correspondence to the SDG targets and climate actions as well as the resulting synergies.
Maximize benefits and minimize trade-offs
“For the NDCs to get traction and speak to the development priorities of countries, it is important that they are developed and implemented such that they maximize co-benefits and minimize trade-offs across the entire range of the SDGs,” said Måns Nilsson, Research Director and Deputy Director of the Stockholm Environment Institute.
In addition, SEI will present analysis on the links between Small Island Developing States’ NDCs and their national development priorities, and the extent to which these plans appear to be mutually reinforcing. Representatives from the Seychelles, Tonga, Antigua and Barbuda will share their experiences, followed by a policy dialogue including the UNFCCC secretariat and the Swedish Ambassador for Climate Change.
The new findings, experiences from small island developing states and the policy dialogue will take place at the event: SDGs and the Paris Agreement. Journalists are invited to attend the event at COP23 in Bonn.
At the UN Climate Change Conference, the Stockholm Environment Institute (SEI) and the German Development Institute / Deutsches Institut für Entwicklungspolitik (DIE) launched the NDC-SDG Connections tool, highlighting the synergies between the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and its Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), and the Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs) submitted by countries under the Paris Agreement on climate change.
