SEI Research Director on the urgency for countries to raise their ambition levels

SEI Research Director Åsa Persson appeared on Swedish Television to discuss the urgency for countries to raise their ambition levels in setting and achieving their nationally determined contributions (NDCs) to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, and to try to keep global warming under 2 degrees.

The UN Environment Emissions Gap Report was released in anticipation of the upcomig international climate change negotiations beginning 3 December in Katowice, Poland. SEI Research Director Åsa Persson commented on the report in Swedish Television, SVT Rapport.

“The report is extremely serious. Countries need to raise the ambition level in their national climate plans, so that they reach the goal of limiting global warming under 2 degrees,” said Åsa Persson.

SVT: “What will happen if we don’t do anything?”

“The effects might be halved global fishing, extinct coral reefs, many more people suffering from water stress, and more heat waves. It also points towards the need to focus on climate adaptation, to help people in the most vulnerable areas of the world.”
