Mastawesha Misganaw Engdaw

Mastawesha is a Research Fellow at SEI Africa.

His background is natural resources management, climate change, geoinformation science and physical climate science.

He began his career as an academic and research staff member in the Department of Natural Resources Management at Jimma University, Ethiopia. Mastawesha later worked as a Scientist on the “Climate Change Uncertainties, Thresholds, and Coping Strategies” project, funded by the Austrian Science Fund at the Wegener Center for Climate and Global Change. He also worked within the United Nations system as a consultant for the Space4Climate Action programme of the United Nations Office for Outer Space Affairs (UNOOSA) in Vienna, Austria, focusing on the application of space-based technologies for climate action.

Mastawesha was also recognized as a Young Professional by the Space4Water programme of UNOOSA and the Prince Sultan Bin Abdulaziz International Prize for Water. 

His research interests include climate and hydrological extremes, climate change impacts and attribution, loss and damage, regional climate change, and climate services. He applies interdisciplinary approaches to better understand climate risks and their implications for people and ecosystems.

Mastawesha holds a BSc in Natural Resources Management from Jimma University, an MSc in Geo-information Science and Earth Observation for Water Resources and Environmental Management from ITC, University of Twente, the Netherlands, an MSc in Climate Change from the University of Copenhagen, Denmark, and a PhD in Physical Climate Science from the University of Graz, Austria.
