Ensuring availability and sustainable management of water and sanitation for all requires huge shifts in investment and political priorities. However, small changes in the planning and implementation of water, sanitation and hygiene services can make a difference and change lives.
ITP capacity development program was created to support local actors in the development of sustainable sanitation in cities. The program is running from 2016 to 2021, but SEI has been involved since 2017 and will go on till 2021, a total of 4 years.
SEI is contracted by Niras to facilitate half-day seminars in Sweden during phase 2. SEI experts Kim Andersson, Daniel Ddiba and Linus Dagerskog have been conducting seminars for the parts of the program aimed for Africa and Asia since 2017. So far, the team has delivered eight seminars in total.
Nelson Ekane is also involved as a mentor for the Rwanda country teams in their institutional Change Projects from 2018 to 2021. Daniel Ddiba will also serve as a mentor for the Kenya country teams from 2019 to 2021.
Each year involves two different sets of six participants from 5 different countries in Africa and in Asia, hence a total of 120 participants participate in the program each year.
The participants are taken through five phases altogether lasting about 1.5 years of engagement:
- Phase 1: Inception (4 months in home country)
- Phase 2: Training in Sweden (3 weeks in Sweden)
- Phase 3: Change Project Development (4 months in home country)
- Phase 4: Training in the region (2 weeks in one of the region’s countries e.g. Uganda for Africa and Nepal in Asia)
- Phase 5: Change Project Implementation (5 months in home country)
