The China node for sustainable sanitation

The ultimate ambition of the China Node for Sustainable Sanitation (CNSS) is to influence Chinese policy to promote and guide sustainable sanitation development throughout Asia, and to assist in social marketing. The overall aim is that China would act as a catalyst for sustainable sanitation development within the region.

There is a strong opportunity and demand in China to promote sustainable sanitation solutions. Nationally, overall betterment of the living standard and a rapidly growing middle class have all put strong demand on improving the access to, and quality of, sanitation.

Sustainable sanitation is an integral part of the development agenda in China. There is great potential for promoting and facilitating the mainstreaming of sustainable sanitation issues in both rural and urban areas.

Project implementation

The challenge for the CNSS is to promote sustainable sanitation solutions in emerging cities and towns.

Specific objectives guiding our work include:

• Establishing a ‘clearinghouse’ for information, communication and education in the area of sustainable sanitation development in China.
• Building Chinese partnerships, as well as South-South and North-South international networks, with the ambition that the CNSS takes more of an East Asia regional perspective in the long run.
• Developing sustainable sanitation projects, with a focus on integrating sustainable sanitation with major national programs; creating successful urban models as city-based solutions; organic farming and ”green food” production.

The long-term ambition is to find national funding in China, creating a situation where the project can run independently of Sida-funding.
