The editors of Climate and Development react to the “Hot List” of 1,000 influential scholars in climate change published by Reuters on 20 April 2021.
In this editorial, the Editors of Climate and Development express dismay at the fact that only 122 women are on the recent Reuters’ “Hot List” of 1,000 influential scholars — and only 111 of the scholars are based in institutions in countries of the Global South.
The piece briefly outlines the academic biases reflected in the list, the unequal research conditions in the Global South, and the reality of colonial models of scientific practice. It then gives a call to action, outlining ways scholars, journal editors and publishers can “confront this demonstrable and significant inequity in academia through systemic changes in the way we publish and cite academic contributions.”
