The Absa Kip Keino Classic is a premier athletics event held annually in Kenya, attracting elite athletes and global attention. Over the past two editions (2023 and 2024), UNEP, SEI and Athletics Kenya have collaboratively supported air quality awareness campaigns tied to this event, positioning sport as a critical platform for environmental advocacy.
Athletics Kenya, in partnership with the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) Regional Office for Africa and the Stockholm Environment Institute (SEI) Africa Centre, is leading an initiative to connect environment and sports in Africa, focusing on air quality and climate action.
Through the Initiative, air quality monitoring sensors have been installed in 13 stadiums and sports facilities in five countries. These include Kenya (Kasarani, Nyayo, Lobo Village in Eldoret, Kapsabet, Nakuru Sports Club and Ulinzi Sports Complex); Ethiopia (Ethiopian Youth Sports Academy); Tanzania (Benjamin Mkapa Stadium in Dar es Salaam and Amaan stadium); Senegal (Abdoulaye Wade Diamniadio stadium); and Zambia (Levy Mwanawasa Stadium in Ndola and National Heroes Stadium, Lusaka).
