ASEAN Renewable Energy Long-Term Roadmap

A flagship study by the ASEAN Centre for Energy (ACE) draws on ASEAN member states’ latest plans and policies and explores new scenarios for renewable energy integration. SEI served as the lead modeller, working collaboratively with the ACE team to develop the analysis.

The study produced several key projections. First, renewable capacity is expected to surpass fossil fuel capacity in the region’s power systems by 2030. This shift implies that high penetrations of variable renewable power will require targeted investments in grid flexibility. Second, the transport and industry sectors can achieve deep decarbonization through a combination of electrification, biofuels, and hydrogen, highlighting the importance of intra-regional biofuel trade to fully unlock ASEAN’s bioenergy potential.

Overall, the findings show that ambitious renewable energy pathways remain aligned with current national plans across ASEAN. This roadmap will serve as a key framework for the next phase of ASEAN’s official Plan of Action for Energy Cooperation.
