In December 2019, the European Council agreed to make Europe the first continent to achieve climate neutrality by 2050. As part of its Green Deal, the European Commission is going to propose the European Climate Law, which will enshrine the 2050 climate neutrality objective in legislation.
The Green Deal acknowledges that achieving the vision of climate neutrality can only succeed if the transition is fair and inclusive. Therefore, policies at the EU and the national level need to address the dual challenge of the technological feasibility of climate neutrality on one hand and the social ramifications of the transition on the other.
