As a part of the 2024 ASEAN-Australia Special Summit, the Climate and Clean Energy Track brings together regional stakeholders to share practical actions and foster cooperation to support an accelerated clean energy transition. This session aims to boost collaboration and investment in the region’s clean energy transition to address the shared challenges we face.

The objectives of the program reflect the shared focus of ASEAN and the Australian Government to decarbonise our economies and work with other countries in the region to upscale global action against climate change.

Australia’s Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade (DFAT) supports SEI Asia’s Mekong Thought Leadership and Think Tanks Network through the Mekong-Australia Partnership. This 3-year initiative seeks to create actionable, evidence-based strategies for water, energy, and development issues in the Mekong Region, aiming for impactful policy and practice improvements. It has also supported the Mekong Environmental Resilience Week in September 2023 which brought together around 140 policymakers, researchers, civil society representatives, and development practitioners to foster collaboration on pressing issues related to water, energy, and climate.

At the ASEAN-Australia Special Summit 2024, Australia has announced it is investing a further $222.5 million to support the resilience and prosperity of the Mekong Region through the Mekong-Australia Partnership (MAP). Australian government announced that this second phase of funding for MAP over the next five years will address priorities and shared challenges with a focus on improving water security, responding to climate change and combatting transnational crime.
