Luke Gooding is a researcher at SEI, based at the University of York, with a focus on sustainable energy governance, ecological citizenship, and participatory energy transitions. His work explores how policy, design, and community practices intersect in the development of Smart Local Energy Systems (SLES), energy retrofitting, and place-based energy solutions. With published research spanning topics such as retrofit supply chains, end-user engagement, and co-designed ecological futures, Luke brings a critical and practice-informed perspective to energy policy discourse.
Community-led energy initiatives, from solar co-ops to shared heat pumps and retrofit schemes, are growing across the UK. Yet questions around how these projects are governed, who makes decisions, and what participation looks like in practice remain complex. The CE-CS (Community Energy – Citizen Science) project brings together citizens, researchers and community groups to explore these issues, identify shared concerns, and co-create research grounded in lived experience.
In this live Q&A with Luke Gooding, we will reflect on how dominant governance models in the energy sector can be challenged and reimagined. Drawing on interdisciplinary case studies, Luke will explore how local energy transitions might benefit from more inclusive, context-sensitive and community-led approaches. Participants are invited to listen, reflect and follow up with questions or ideas that can shape future work within the CE‑CS project.
Are you involved in community energy or interested in local energy decisions? We’d like to meet you!
This online session is offered exclusively to participants in the CE-CS project. Read more about the project and if you’re interested in joining, please complete the short form below. The event access details will be sent to you afterwards.
