Fifteenth meeting of the SBSTA research dialogue

The 15th SBSTA Research Dialogue will bridge the scientific community, policy makers and stakeholders, focusing on the latest climate science findings and research needs, especially for developing nations. Key themes include transformational adaptation, non-CO2 greenhouse gases and negative emissions technologies. The dialogue will inform UNFCCC and Paris Agreement negotiations and utilize insights from the recently published IPCC’s sixth assessment report.

Background

The research dialogue provides a forum between the scientific community, Parties and non-Party stakeholders to convey research findings and lessons learned and discuss needs for research and research capacity building, particularly those of developing countries, to support the implementation of the UNFCCC and the Paris Agreement. Themes for each meeting of the dialogue are guided by submissions, as well as the mandates and ongoing work under the UNFCCC, including the global stocktake, the global goal on adaptation work programme and the mitigation work programme. Information on past meetings of the research dialogue is available online.

The synthesis report of the IPCC sixth assessment report (AR6) has been published since the last meeting of the research dialogue in June 2022. A SBSTA-IPCC special event on the synthesis report is held in conjunction with SBSTA 58 on Monday 5 June in advance of the fifteenth meeting of the research dialogue.

The fifteenth meeting of the research dialogue, as identified in the annotations and the scenario note for SBSTA 58, will inform the negotiations on research and systematic observation that will take place under agenda item 8(a). I encourage Parties to use the information highlighted by this year’s dialogue as well as other relevant events in that work.
