From words to action: implementing biodiversity and climate strategies for resilient societies

From words to action is a new series of six interconnected events held by SEI’s global centres during fall 2024. The events will foster discussion, elevate scientific findings and present key tools for locally relevant action.

17 September to 15 October 2024

SEI’s global centres in Colombia, Kenya, Thailand, the US, Estonia and headquarters in Sweden will host a series of six interconnected events across four continents, tailored to support regional stakeholders’ needs.

These events, available both online and in-person, will highlight regionally relevant interdependencies and amplify scientific methods for integrated implementation of global biodiversity and climate agreement goals.

Attendees will gain access to the latest findings from state-of-the-art research, tools and evidence from the SEI research landscape, showcasing the benefits of coordinated action on biodiversity and climate.

Find out more about each SEI centre event and register on the tabs below.

The series launched on 17 September 2024 at an integrated online event, with keynotes from the Chairs of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) and the Intergovernmental Panel for Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services (IPBES). SEI presenters previewed the events in the series and discussed tools and evidence from the SEI research landscape which demonstrate the win-wins of acting on biodiversity and climate in concert.

Driving resilience: mobilizing finance for climate and biodiversity amid geopolitical tensions

The escalating triple crises of climate change, biodiversity loss and pollution make the coming years crucial for paving a way to sustainable and resilient economies and enhancing health and security. As efforts to cut greenhouse gas emissions and protect biodiversity fall short, the gap between needed actions and effective policies continues to grow. Despite the urgency, rising international conflicts complicate the achievement of global agreements.

Due to geopolitical tensions in Central-Eastern Europe and the EU Eastern Partnership region, a focus on these countries is essential, particularly in understanding how to uphold ambitious green initiatives amidst ongoing challenges. Mobilizing finance is key to accelerating responses to the interconnected risks and achieving sustainability goals despite geopolitical tensions. This event will explore how the region could invest in nature and adopt transformative approaches to tackle climate and biodiversity challenges together.

From gray to green: finding common cause for people and planet

Synergies between biodiversity conservation, climate action and sustainable development: perspectives for COP16

As we face critical moments in addressing the interconnected challenges of climate change, biodiversity loss and pollution, this event aims to explore how the upcoming COP16 in Colombia can drive the integration between biodiversity conservation and climate action. We will focus on the necessary transitions for the Amazon’s economic model and key areas such as public policy coherence, sustainable finance, bioeconomy, agricultural practices and the ecological restoration of tropical forests.

Objective

Discuss the key elements for integrating the climate and biodiversity agendas within the framework of COP16, with an emphasis on the necessary transitions for the Amazonian economic model. Common ground will be identified to enhance synergies between climate action and biodiversity in the following areas:

  • Public policy coherence
  • Finance
  • Bioeconomy and value chains
  • Agroforestry and agricultural practices
  • Ecological restoration

The role of nature-based solutions in Southeast and South Asia to address the poly-crisis of biodiversity, climate and land degradation

Five of the world’s top 20 biodiverse countries are found in Southeast Asia while the region also faces significant land and forest degradation and high climate vulnerability. The inter-linked crises of biodiversity, climate and land use have in the past been approached in a siloed manner that has not been effective. At the same time, there are opportunities to significantly enhance carbon sinks in the rich and diverse forests, soils and agricultural areas in the region. Integrated responses and regional partnerships that incorporate nature-based solutions (NBS) could offer the elusive triple win. The presentations, to be followed by Q&A and discussion, include the following topics:

  • Raising ambition for land use, nature and climate in Southeast Asia
  • The Southeast Asia Climate and Nature-based Solutions (SCeNe) Coalition
  • Enhancing ecosystem services in wetlands: biodiversity, climate and livelihoods
  • Restoring and regenerating landscapes for people, climate and nature

Bioeconomy for climate resilient development

Biodiversity forms the foundation of the planet’s life-support systems, offering essential services that sustain human life and well-being. However, global biodiversity is under severe threat from human activities, climate change, and unsustainable practices. The upcoming COP16 on biodiversity and the increasing recognition of the need for concerted global action highlight the urgency of addressing these challenges.

This event, hosted by SEI Africa, seeks to explore how the bioeconomy can support climate-resilient development across different regions. The event focus on key systemic topics that intersect biodiversity and climate, providing insights into opportunities, challenges and innovative approaches within the bioeconomy.
