Thought leadership for a post-2030 agenda: workshop two – “pathways to impact”

This two-day workshop explored how to advance thought leadership for a post-2030 sustainable development agenda. The program brought together invited experts and policymakers to deepen understanding of policy demand, explore how science can support the post-2030 process, and identify opportunities for collaboration.

Stockholm, Sweden

This workshop was the second in the “Thought leadership for a post-2030 agenda” series initiated by SEI and Monash Sustainable Development Institute (MSDI) in 2024. The first workshop was held in Jakarta, Indonesia in December 2024. Building on that initial gathering and as we move toward the 2030 deadline of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), the workshop brought together invited experts in SDGs research and the science- policy interface, along with selected policymakers engaging in multilateral cooperation for sustainable development.

Aims

The workshop aimed to deepen understanding of key policy demand and knowledge gaps, and to strengthen engagement with policy actors. It provided space to discuss opportunities and partnerships for contributing scientific insights on a sustainable development framework to the UN, member states, and formal negotiation processes by and beyond 2030. Participants identified opportunities for collaborative research and strategic activities for 2026 and 2027.

It opened with a science-policy dialogue on “Advancing science-based approaches for a post-2030 sustainable development agenda”, at which policymakers and researchers exchanged perspectives on the state of SDG implementation, successes and shortfalls of the 2030 Agenda, and implications for shaping a post-2030 framework.

The two-day program continued with a mix of thematic working group sessions and plenary discussions to connect insights across different areas of expertise. Throughout the two days, participants worked together to identify research ideas and activities for impact, map opportunities for collaboration, and outline potential joint outputs and next steps for the thought leadership process. The program also provided space for informal exchange and networking to strengthen relationships that can support future work.
